According to the Hebrew calendar, the 27th of Nisan marks Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel.

Flags are at half-mast here tonight.
On this same day, the United Nations and Switzerland decided to host Durban II in Geneva, and made its guest of honour none other than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
A map showing the divisiveness of the conference. (Violet marks boycotting countries, Green marks members of the preparatory committee).
Let me put that another way to better elucidate how strange of a world we live in. The U.N. - the same organization that in November 1947, almost 52 years earlier, decided to partition Palestine into two states and thus pave the way for the foundation of Israel - now has chosen to support Switzerland - a country renowned for its neutrality in foreign affairs to the point that most major international institutions have their seats within its borders; This 'neutral' country is using Geneva as a base for Durban II, the 2009 United Nations World Conference Against Racism, (in reference to the 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism that took place in Durban, South Africa). Why not just call it Geneva I? Or simply Geneva? In this story though, that is definitely not the weird part. The guest of honour of this United Nations World Conference Against Racism is the one of the most infamous Holocaust deniers in the world today, who has repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel.

Then again, hypocrisy concerning human rights at this conference was to be expected ever since the U.N. decided (in 2007) to allow Libya - one of the worst violators of human rights - to chair the prepatory committee.

Oh, and did I mention that today is Hitler's birthday?
